I WOULD CLASSIFIED THIS FILM AS A FANTASY/COMEDY OF THE EARLIER DAYS. AT LEAST NOW I KNOW, FROM WHOM THE WRITERS OF TARZAN, BORROWED THE IDEAS FROM! 1 OUT 5 STARS!

This is one of the strangest films I have ever seen. It's a bizarre and phantasmagoric fantasy following the various exploits of a seafaring prodigy (raised by monkeys no less) and features a man-eating whale, a huge murderous lobster, some white elephant-stealing Siamese bandits (in cahoots with Amazon warriors of course), cannibals, cowboys, American Indians and a climactic balloon battle amongst other unlikely characters and scenarios. The acting is quite bad (the actors seem to have been given little or no cohesive direction and seem to be "winging it" throughout), but the costumes, sets and effects are quite endearing and occasionally very effective. The depiction of the various non-western cultures can be wince-inducing to say the least--apparently if you're not European you're ignorant, clumsy and easily duped--but this is a failing which must be viewed through the context of the time in which this was made. The film delights in it's utter lack of logic, and the anachronistic glee with which cultures and time periods are smashed together is sometimes frustrating, sometimes exhilarating, but never less than fascinating. Overall, if you can get past the film's obvious shortcomings you will be rewarded with a very imaginative and entertaining fantasy. I rate it three stars out of five.
