Is it only me that finds this extrememly tiresome?
OK, so we know this was the 'Little Tramp's first appearance, but there is no comedy in this, no pathos, not even any acting skill. It's a single, poor 'joke' repeated to the point of annoyance.

There are many very early films of Chaplin which have dated very badly because we live in different times.
It is the later feature length films which he directed himself which remain enjoyable masterpieces and show his genius and humanity.
It would be a tragedy to see this short as in any way representative of CC. It is only of archival interest.
But it is a nice clear print!

You can read here about the actual race and where and how Chaplin filmed it.
